In the United States, it’s not officially winter until you wear a
sweater dress. In the 1960s, that meant smart, tailored shifts or
swinging frocks with hand-knit bell sleeves. In the 1970s, hemlines
dropped and a belted A-line was the standard for ladies who lunched on
Park Avenue and for bohemian creatives slumming it on Delancey Street.
Later, the 1980s brought oversized this and slouchy
that while the 1990s
brought back Lolita style with babydoll dresses finished off with peter
pan collars or schoolgirl “uniforms” marked with plaid or argyle.
In the 2000s, sweater dresses have become a smorgasbord of
varying silhouettes and pattern play. This season, Joseph introduced a
straight jacket cut that drove us nuts, Michael Kors owned the elongated
cardigan, and Emilio Pucci kept things short and sassy—just the way we
like it.
